Recipe Riot

I am starting this blog to record the recipes from Grandma's hand written recipe book. Its very splattered and some recipes will be lost because they are now unreadable. However will post what I have.

Most recipes do not have assembly directions. I guess back then they assumed everyone knew that you cream the shortening and sugar, add eggs etc. Hopefully everyone will be able to figure it out. rarely were baking times and temps recorded because baking was done in a wood burning cook stove. So good luck if you attempt to reproduce the recipes.

Chocolate Cake (from Aunt Tetta)
3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cup sugar blend
3 eggs
3 Tablespoons Cocoa---Stir two minutes
3/4 cup milk
2 1/4 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
vanilla (I would estimate 1 -2 teaspoons) No other instructions. I'd bake in a greased and floured pan( 9 x 13 ) at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes (but check to see if its done before that)

Coffee Cake (from Mrs Loseke)
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup syrup
1 cup strong coffee
4 1/2 cups flour
1 box raisins (about 1 lb)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
3 eggs
2 tsp baking powder
Bake a good hour---again no assembly given and no pan size.

Boiled Icing
1 cup sugar
5 Tablespoons water

White of 1 egg
Put Sugar and water together, boil until it thickens. Beat the egg white till stiff, then add the boiling sugar in and beat until it is just right to put on cake.

(Don't you love the directions?) Thats all for today.
